The Lace and Grit Magazine — September 2026 — One Last Taste of Summer

One Last Taste of Summer

A peaceful final summer outing beside the water

September often arrives before summer feels entirely finished. The mornings begin a little more softly and evening comes a little sooner, yet warm afternoons still invite us outdoors and the water still holds the brightness of the season.

This is the perfect month for one last trip to the beach, lake or river before autumn settles in. It may be nothing more elaborate than a quiet walk beside the water, a picnic near the shore or an afternoon spent watching birds move across the shallows.

At home, the feeling of the coast can linger through weathered wood, woven cotton, faded blue, natural grasses and a few meaningful objects gathered during past journeys. There is no need to turn a room into a beach house. One shell, one coastal study or one journal resting beside a favorite chair can hold an entire memory.

I hope this issue encourages you to enjoy summer once more before welcoming the season ahead—and to carry home whatever makes the moment worth remembering.

With gratitude,
Roxanne

This Month’s Inspiration

Where Water Meets Memory

Why quiet shores remain woven into the places and moments we remember most

A quiet shoreline in warm morning light with calm water and grasses along the edge

We often remember water by sound before anything else—the steady arrival of waves, the soft movement of a lake against a dock or a river passing over stones polished smooth by time.

Perhaps that is why so many memories gather near the water. A childhood summer, a shell carried home, a lighthouse seen from a distance or one quiet morning spent looking toward the horizon can remain with us long after the journey ends.

Water carries no photographs, yet it holds some of our clearest memories.

A Simple Coastal Practice

Record the Water as You Find It

The next time you visit a shoreline, lake or river, pause before taking a photograph and notice:

✦   The color and movement of the water

✦   The birds, boats or distant landmarks within view

✦   The sounds nearest to you and those carried from farther away

✦   One detail that makes this place different from every other shore

Write only a few lines if that is all the moment requires. A memory becomes easier to revisit when its smallest details are preserved.

Around the House

Bring Home the Feeling of the Shore

A relaxed coastal-inspired room with soft natural textures

Coastal decorating feels most personal when it reflects a memory rather than a theme. Instead of filling a room with anchors and signs, choose one or two details that remind you of being near the water.

A coastal bird study, a faded blue pillow, a small bowl of shells or a journal beside a sunlit window can suggest the shore without overwhelming the room.

Pair those pieces with pale linen, woven cotton, warm sand tones and weathered wood. The goal is not to recreate the coast—it is to preserve the sense of openness and ease you felt while you were there.

From the Studio

Preserving the Details We Notice

The Coastal Collection began with the details that make every shoreline distinct—the long legs of a heron in shallow water, the shape of a shell, the weathered face of a lighthouse and the changing colors of the horizon.

Those small observations often become the strongest memories. They are also where many Lace & Grit designs begin: with one detail worth noticing and preserving.

A Question for Curious Minds

Which place near the water holds your strongest memory?

A favorite beach, a childhood lake, a river near home or a quiet shoreline discovered during a journey—which place remains with you, and why did it matter?

I’d love to hear your answer. Send me a note and tell me about the place near the water that has stayed with you.

The Conversation Begins Here

September is the first issue to include our new monthly question, so there are no reader responses to share just yet.

In October, this space will feature a few of your coastal memories and reveal the places near the water that Lace & Grit readers treasure most.
